Red Fish Grill

exterior2Two things make dining at the Red Fish Grill extraordinary — fresh seafood and a spectacular view of Biscayne Bay.

Tall palm trees tower over the restaurant, which is located on the shore of the bay in Matheson Hammock Park. At night, the trees are illuminated with soft white lights, making the space feel both wistful and romantic.  The quiet ambience is matched inside the restaurant by striking stone walls, and simple, yet elegant white table cloths.

During a recent visit, the wait staff did an excellent job of being attentive but not imposing. If the food is any indication, the kitchen staff is just as enthusiastic about satisfying their guests.

Seafood is the Red Fish Grill’s specialty. That was obvious when we ordered the fried calamari and jumbo lump crab cakes. The calamari, served with a sweet chili banana sauce, was tender and juicy with a light, crispy coating. It had a distinctly fresh taste of the sea as did the crab cakes which overflowed with an abundance of lump crab meat. Herbaceous notes in the dish paired well with a creamy sauce made from aji amarillo chilies served on the side.

For dinner, I chose the Chilean sea bass — a must try. The fish, presented on a bed of fluffy sushi rice and ginger, was encrusted with garlic and sesame seeds. Shitake mushrooms and spinach served on the side were aptly sautéed without being soggy.

A dining companion ordered another excellent entrée. The grilled Black Angus hanger steak came with Malanga (or taro) fries, a fresh arugula salad, and a house made steak sauce. The smoky flavor, sweetness of the tamarind sauce, and perfect char of the steak made the entire plate a success. Other options for dinner include fresh salads, pan-fried red snapper, and a seasonal vegetable bake with parmesan cream and truffle oil. Although the menu features mostly meat and seafood, certain dishes, such as the Black Mission fig salad, can be tweaked to accommodate a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Red Fish Grill serves dinner Tuesday through Friday at 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm, and 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Matheson Hammock Park Marina, which offers transient space for boaters, is a short walk away. For docking reservations call 305-665-5475.
