Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse

The sun lowered behind the glittering skyscrapers of downtown Miami as my husband and I sat for dinner at Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse in South Pointe Park.

The 17-acre park is a popular spot for boaters as the nearby Miami Beach Marina — roughly a ten-minute walk from S&W — has more than 400 slips and plenty of space for transient boats.

A cruise ship passed through Government Cut waterway and into the Atlantic as we sipped a crisp, oaky chardonnay. The wine was a great complement to our fritto misto, a basket of lightly fried calamari and shrimp with a savory garlic butter sauce. Heeding a waiter’s recommendation, we also ordered their signature crab cakes. Big lumps of delicious crabmeat were presented with greens and a tangy mustard ginger sauce.

We continued to favor seafood and out came a buttery piece of pan-seared sea bass over a creamy shrimp bisque with pickled fennel. My husband’s pink peppercorn-crusted tuna was smooth in texture and accompanied by a colorful Asian slaw. Wasabi cream added the right kick to enhance the dish’s flavor.

Although S&W, and its other locations, are known for steak and seafood, the menu offers something for everyone. Vegetarian options include a tomato carpaccio with buratta, a variety of salads, and a broiled cauliflower steak that could be tweaked to accommodate a vegan diet.

For dessert, we chose the gigantic chocolate cake, which was aptly named. The decedent layer cake was smothered in ganache and melt-in-your-mouth chocolate mousse with the slightest hint of Bailey’s Irish cream. Stuffed and happy, we decided on an after-dinner stroll along the busy, well-lit promenade.

Smith and Wollensky Steakhouse is open from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Monday through Friday; 11:00 am to 12:00 am on Saturday; and 11:00 am to 11:00 pm on Sunday.
